Eat, Shop, Bank Local: Engel and Maharry law firm helps in variety of ways in Corning

For this blog we caught up with the team at Engel and Maharry law firm in Corning.
Ted Engel and Rod Maharry have known each other for years after growing up in southwest Iowa.
Both attorneys spent decades practicing at law firms in Des Moines before partnering to open their own office in Corning and eventually Clive in the Des Moines area.
They purchased an existing law firm operated by longtime Corning attorney Jeff Millhollin, who was retiring. Engel said Millhollin contacted him about taking over the Corning firm.
Engel said he knew he couldn’t do it alone, so he contacted Maharry with the idea of going into practice together. The attorneys purchased the law firm from Millhollin, and Engel and Maharry opened for business in 2011.
Their Corning practice up and running, the attorneys continued to work in Des Moines, with Engel eventually joining Maharry at the firm he worked at. In November of 2017 they both left the firm on the east side of Des Moines to open a second Engel and Maharry office in Clive, a Des Moines suburb.
In the Corning office, Maharry and Engel said they handle probate cases, wills and trusts, real estate filings and some criminal work. They also practice family law in Corning, but that specialty is typically handled in their Clive office, according to the firm. In Clive they practice family law and personal injury law.
In Corning, the attorneys partner with TS Bank on real estate transactions, including handling the abstracting, title work and closings.
“The bank has a great working relationship with Ted, Rod, Deena and Amber at Engel and Maharry,” said TS Bank Corning location AVP of Consumer Credit Kelly Herring. “Occasionally, the bank and the law office are general sounding boards for one another on matters that could need some insight from one or the other.”
Maharry and Engel said they’ve enjoyed their time practicing law in Corning.
“We enjoy the people and getting to know everyone in the community,” the pair said. “We enjoy the small town feel of community and camaraderie.”
